At Drake’s Oysters in Point Reyes.

I saw a few guys were casually fishing off the shore at Drake’s Oysters, and they caught not one, but two sharks! Luckily these sharks were pretty small, so they were spared the untimely end met by their oyster comrades and got tossed back into the bay.

City Notes: San Francisco is a book. The slender volume offers brief accounts of twenty-five sites that currently exist in San Francisco. Composed of a photograph and short text, each entry illustrates the contemporary conditions of the subject and reports on its historical formation. Waxed thread binds the pages to a pair of stained plywood panels. An illustration of the Golden Gate Bridge is engraved on the front panel. The bridge is depicted out of context: without the swirling waters of the strait, the soft lines of the Marin Headlands to the north, the city to the south.

No single theme unifies the contents of City Notes. Among the sites chronicled are an electrical substation, a car ferrycum- house boat, a water fountain disguised as a statue, a taxi driver, and a tiki bar. The places are at turns incongruous and peripheral, outlandish and obscure, extraordinary and banal. They bear traces of things that have long ceased to be. This quality could be found in the locales of any city. The subjects of this volume, however, are unique to San Francisco.

By some measures, City Notes resembles a guidebook. The sites are legally accessible to the public and, in the author’s opinion, worth visiting. Nearly all of them are free. In other respects, City Notes defies the parameters of the genre. Far from the unifying perspectives offered by most tourist literature, City Notes assembles twenty-five points of unresolved meaning into a tenuous and shifting constellation, which floats somewhere outside of the San Francisco that most know or imagine. It is of the city, but suggests another.

This is the “Ice Queen” Dress Tent installation by collaborative performance art duo Adrienne Pao and Robin Lasser, exhibited at artMrkt SF last weekend. Hard to tell from the photo, but the model in the photo is yours truly. I was so thrilled to participate in such an amazing and extensive project! Adrienne and Robin have travelled all over the world creating and installing interactive dress tents specific to various cultural and political environments. Their newest piece is the amazing Ms. Russia: Camera Obscura tent, installed in Yekateringburg, Russia — worn by none other than the Miss Yekaterinburg herself. While visiting my dad’s on the East Coast, I went on a cleaning binge. I had no trouble tossing old clothes, sentimental doo-dads, and stuffed animals left and right, but when I stumbled across these old beauties, I balked. Even though these chucks make me feel like I’m sixteen again (and not necessarily in a good way), I just don’t think I can let them go quite yet.

I used to have an apron exactly like this, except that it was red gingham, not green. No wonder I was so excited when I found in the $1 bin at a Mission thrift store — I must have a genetic attraction to tacky things. Sadly, but I think the apron got thrown out when in the recent move, along with the billion other kitschy treasures I couldn’t find room for in my tiny new place. I’d only I’d known it was a true vintage piece…
